Five Ways to Unwind Fully Clothed, With Nobody's Hands on You
You love the idea of a spa. The calm, the warmth, the hour that's all yours. What you could happily skip is the robe, the towel-juggling, a stranger's hands and the small talk.
Good news: you can have the whole spa feeling, fully clothed, with nobody touching you. Maybe you dress modestly. Maybe you're body-conscious, or touch just isn't your thing. Maybe you simply prefer it. Whatever your reason, these five sessions were made for you.
1. BackHug: the back massage you take fully dressed
BackHug at Lothian Road, Edinburgh is the robotic back therapy bed taking off in gyms, recovery studios and sports teams, including Upgrade Labs in the US. You lie back in your own clothes. Twenty-six robotic fingers roll and press along your spine from your neck to your lower back. A zero-gravity leg rest lifts your legs to 90°, the bed warms beneath you, and a back scan maps your spine before you start.
No therapist, no hands. Only the neck section meets bare skin. You hold the controls in the app: strength, speed, heat and focus, all set exactly how you like them, and you can pause whenever you want.
It works fast. In BackHug's own study of 13 people, a single session left them reporting 44% less back discomfort.
A 60-minute session is £75, with 60 minutes of spa and wellness facilities included (facilities vary by spa, visit our spa page for details).
2. Zerobody dry float: weightless, clothed and dry
At Union Square, Aberdeen, the Zerobody dry float is a bed of around 400 litres of warm water under a soft membrane. You lie on top, fully dressed, and stay completely dry. No tank. No salt water. No wet hair, no shower, no getting changed.
The room is private and nobody touches you. Choose a programme of guided mindfulness, breathing or music, dim the coloured lights if you like it darker, and float. Zerobody beds are used by top-flight sports teams in American football, baseball, basketball and soccer.
Thirty minutes is £45 and 60 minutes is £55.
3. Compression boots: 30 quiet minutes, no hands
Slip your legs into Therabody compression boots, lie back and let them squeeze and release in a slow, steady rhythm from your feet to your thighs. A specialist therapist fits them, then the boots do all the work. No massage, no chat, just you and the rhythm.
They're tested in tough company. In a trial with 72 ultramarathon finishers, a session in compression boots left legs feeling less fatigued straight afterwards.
Thirty minutes is £35 and 60 minutes is £55, at Lothian Road, Union Square and Witney Lakes.
4. Infrared sauna in a private wellness room
Your own private wellness room, your own pace. An infrared sauna session wraps you in deep, even warmth with nobody else around. Set the lights how you like them and play your own music from your phone through the built-in cradle.
Thirty minutes is £25. At Union Square, choose the Red Light-Infused Infrared Sauna for warm red light as well.
5. Therabody SmartGoggles: a reset for tired eyes
Therabody SmartGoggles sit softly over your eyes with gentle warmth, soothing vibration and light compression. Twenty minutes in the dark with your eyes wrapped in warmth, and screen-tired eyes feel brand new.
It's a 20-minute add-on for £15 alongside your session at Rose Street, Edinburgh and Union Square, Aberdeen.
