Cold hands. Tight shoulders. A head full of the day. Step into an infrared sauna and feel all of it melt. The warmth sinks right into you, your muscles soften, your breathing slows and, thirty minutes later, you walk out loose, glowing and properly switched off.

Infrared sauna starts at just £25 for 30 minutes at PURE. Choose our red light-infused infrared sauna at Union Square in Aberdeen, or book the private basement wellness suite at Lothian Road in Edinburgh.

Why infrared feels so good

A traditional sauna blasts the air around you to around 80°C. Infrared works differently. Its heaters warm your body directly, so the cabin can run far cooler while you still feel the heat deep in your muscles. You breathe easily, you can stay longer and you never feel like you are being cooked.

The difference is measurable. In a Finnish study, heart rate in the infrared sauna averaged 71 beats a minute, against 92 in a traditional sauna. The researchers called infrared "a very light loading for the body". In a Dutch study, 88% of people said they felt comfortable or very comfortable after 30 minutes at 55°C.

Deep warmth, without the struggle. That is why people who never liked saunas fall for infrared.

Your post-workout secret weapon

Athletes are onto this. In a 2023 trial, 16 basketball players used an infrared sauna after a weights session on one day and simply rested on another. After the sauna they felt less sore and more recovered, and they kept more of the spring in their jump.

So whether you have just finished a long run, a heavy leg day or a five-a-side, 30 minutes of infrared is the warm, easy way to help your body bounce into the next session.

The red light-infused infrared sauna

At Union Square, Aberdeen, our red light-infused infrared sauna adds panels of red and near-infrared light to the infrared warmth. You sit back in the same deep, gentle heat, bathed in a rich red glow. It looks every bit as good as it does on your feed, and it is just £25 for 30 minutes.

The private wellness suite at Lothian Road

Under our Lothian Road spa in Edinburgh sits a private basement wellness suite: an infrared sauna, a hot or cold plunge and a relaxation lounge, all yours. Bring your partner, your best friend or the whole group. Heat up, plunge, lounge, repeat.

The Wellness Suite for Two gives you 120 minutes for £310. It is the spa day for two you will be talking about for months, and it makes a standout anniversary or birthday gift.

How a session works

  1. Arrive and settle in. You have your own private room.
  2. Set the mood. Choose your colour lighting and pop your phone in the cradle to play your own music.
  3. Sink into the heat. Sit back and let the warmth build slowly through your body.
  4. Let go. Thirty minutes of deep warmth, slow breathing and nothing to do.
  5. Cool down and glow. Take a few minutes, sip some water and head back into your day loose, warm and radiant.

Treatments of 60 minutes or longer include 60 minutes of spa and wellness facilities. Facilities vary by spa, so visit our spa page for details.

Your winter warm-up

When the days are short and the wind cuts straight through your coat, nothing beats it. Thirty minutes of infrared warms you from the inside out, puts colour back in your cheeks and leaves you feeling cosy for hours. Make it your weekly ritual from October to March and winter suddenly feels a lot shorter. Book a regular slot after work and give yourself something warm to look forward to every week.

Who books infrared

  • People who find traditional saunas too hot. Infrared runs cooler and still warms you right through.
  • Gym-goers, runners and team players who want a warm, easy finish to training.
  • Desk workers after a 30-minute reset that unknots a long week.
  • Anyone who always feels cold. On a grey day, half an hour of deep warmth is unbeatable.
  • Couples and friends who want a private, shared spa experience.
  • Skin-glow seekers. You leave with that warm, rosy, just-back-from-holiday flush.
  • People who prefer not to be touched. No therapist, no fuss, just warmth.
