Women's Health: Menopause and Massage
Menopause affects nearly every woman at some point, yet it rarely comes up in the treatment room, even though massage can genuinely help with some of its more physical effects. Here's what we wish more guests knew.
Why menopause affects the body the way it does
During perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen levels affect far more than reproductive function — oestrogen also plays a role in regulating body temperature, sleep architecture, and joint and muscle comfort. This is part of why symptoms like disrupted sleep, joint stiffness, and increased tension are so common during this stage of life, even though they can feel unrelated to "the menopause" at first.

What massage can and can't do
Massage doesn't affect hormone levels directly, but it does have well-documented effects on the body's stress response — reducing circulating cortisol and activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which can ease muscle tension and support better sleep quality. For symptoms driven by physical tension and stress load, that's a meaningful, measurable effect — though it's not a treatment for menopause itself, and we always encourage guests to speak with their GP about broader symptom management.

What's actually different about the treatment
Our Menopause Massage is adapted with this stage of life specifically in mind: a slower pace, particular attention to areas that tend to hold tension (neck, shoulders, lower back), and techniques aimed at easing the disrupted sleep and low energy many women describe.

You don't need to explain yourself
One of the most common things we hear from guests afterwards is relief that they didn't have to justify booking it, or explain what they were going through in detail. The treatment is built around the assumption that you know your body, our therapists are simply there to help.
It's not just about symptoms
Plenty of guests book this treatment simply because it's designed around where they are in life right now, not despite it. That reframing, from "working around a problem" to "treatment built for me" — is often just as valuable as the massage itself.
