Winter Skin: How to Prep Yourself for Colder Weather
As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, your skin can feel the shift in seasons too. Winter's cold weather is notorious for zapping moisture from our skin, leaving it dry, irritated and in need of extra care. But fear not—there are ways to winter-proof your skin and keep it glowing all season long. Here's how to get prepped:
Switch to a Richer Moisturiser: When winter rolls in, lightweight lotions often don’t stand a chance against the cold. This is the perfect time to switch to oil-based skincare. Oils not only nourish your skin but also create a barrier that locks in hydration and shields your skin from harsh winter winds. Look for natural oils like jojoba, rosehip, or argan—these are packed with essential fatty acids and antioxidants that keep your skin soft, supple, and glowing. Oil-based products are brilliant for replenishing lost moisture and providing that extra layer of protection your skin craves in colder weather.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Your skin needs more than just external moisture—it craves hydration from within. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and incorporate hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon, and citrus fruits into your diet, even though you may just be craving carbs and warming food, don’t skip on the fruit! Herbal teas are also a great way to boost hydration when it’s chilly outside.
Don’t Skip the SPF: Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you should ditch your sunscreen. UV rays can still damage your skin on cloudy days or when you're surrounded by a blanket of snow. Continue to apply an SPF of at least 30 daily to protect your skin from sun damage.
Exfoliate (But Don’t Overdo It): Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, allowing your moisturiser to penetrate more deeply. But in winter, it’s important to be gentle. Switch to a mild exfoliant, such as a gentle scrub or an enzyme-based exfoliator, and limit use to 1-2 times per week to avoid over-stripping your skin.
Invest in a Humidifier: Central heating may keep you warm, but it’s a major culprit for drying out your skin. Combat this by placing a humidifier in your bedroom or living room to add moisture back into the air. Your skin (and hair) will thank you for it.
Keep Showers Short and Lukewarm: As tempting as a piping hot shower may be on a cold winter day, it’s better to stick to lukewarm water. Hot water strips away the skin’s natural oils, leaving it more prone to dryness. Keep your showers short and pat (don’t rub) your skin dry afterward to retain moisture.
Pamper Your Lips and Hands: Lips and hands are the first to feel the bite of winter’s chill, so treat them to the nourishing power of nature. Choose lip balms and hand creams made from natural ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil to prevent chapping and cracking. Beeswax is a fantastic natural barrier, sealing in moisture while soothing irritated skin. For a boost of hydration, opt for balms enriched with natural oils like almond or avocado, which are packed with vitamins and fatty acids to keep your lips and hands soft, smooth, and protected all winter long.
Book a Nourishing Facial: For an extra boost, treat yourself to a hydrating winter facial. At PURE Spa & Beauty, we offer facials tailored to combat winter woes, like our PURE Deluxe Facial, designed to deeply nourish and revive dry, tired skin. A perfect way to rejuvenate and refresh as the colder months settle in.
