Summer is closer than it looks, and if smooth skin by then is the goal, laser hair removal isn't a same-week fix — it's a countdown. Here's the realistic timeline to plan around.

The science: selective photothermolysis

Laser hair removal works on a principle called selective photothermolysis. The laser emits a specific wavelength of light that's absorbed by melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, converting to heat and damaging the follicle's ability to produce new hair — while the surrounding skin is left largely unaffected because it absorbs far less of that particular wavelength.

Why laser hair removal needs a head start

Hair grows in three distinct cycles: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser is only effective on hair in the anagen phase, when the follicle is most pigmented and active — and at any given time, only a portion of your hair is in that phase. That's exactly why it takes a course of sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, to catch every follicle as it cycles through, rather than one treatment doing it all at once.

The 3-month countdown

• 12 weeks out: Book your first session and get your course scheduled in. Most areas need 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, so starting early means you're not rushing appointments in.
• 8 weeks out: You should be a few sessions in. Avoid waxing or plucking between now and your last session — shaving is fine, but removing the root disrupts the process by removing the very follicle the laser needs to target.
• 4 weeks out: Keep appointments consistent. This is usually when guests start to notice visibly less regrowth as more follicles have been caught in their active phase.
• 1–2 weeks out: Ideally your last session lands here, giving skin time to settle before you're on show.

Don't worry — any head start is better than none. Even a shorter course will reduce regrowth by catching a portion of follicles in their active phase; you may simply need a top-up session or two after summer to finish the job.
