My Theragun Massage Experience - Gabrielle Macdonald

We had Gabrielle Macdonald, Pro Golfer and PURE Ambassador in to test out our latest treatment with the Theragun Elite by Therabody!

Massage guns have become a popular tool to loosen any tight knots you may have and to reduce the effects of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) by stimulating recovery.

On arrival at Pure Spa my therapist explained to me how the Theragun works and how the treatment would be a blend of manual massage and the Theragun percussive therapy.

I learned that the Theragun works by delivering a deep tissue body massage that reaches 60% deeper into your muscles than other products (sometimes at as many as 40 repetitions per second), which increases blood flow to that area and helps to loosen your muscles and relieve tension.

Just after Christmas I was treated to a Theragun massage at PURE Spa, Newhaven. It was my first experience of the Theragun and I was really intrigued to find out what it would be like. I know many athletes are now using them as part of their warm up and recovery routine but they also became popular in 2020 during lockdown for a wide range of users - useful after a “Joe Wicks” workout or even if you are a bit sore from too much gardening!

I learned that the Theragun works by applying fast repetitive pulses into soft tissues (sometimes at as many as 40 repetitions per second) which increases blood flow to that area and helps to loosen your muscles and relieve tension. The initial feeling for me was that it was quite “ticklish” and gave me the occasional muscle spasm (I had just finished a workout, so I think my body was quite tense). Once I got over the initial feeling, I relaxed and really enjoyed the massage. 

It was more intense than my usual go to Swedish massage but the different settings of the Theragun allow you, or your therapist, to adjust the intensity of percussion, so the massage is tailored to you and how you are feeling that day. I would say the treatment was similar to a deep tissue massage and the following day I could really feel the after effects. Once the initial soreness and tiredness wore off, I felt a lot looser, particularly in my shoulders and felt fresh and ready to train again! 

The massage was a different experience to a normal spa massage mostly due to the noise of the Theragun but I even found that therapeutic! If you’re looking for a deep tissue sports massage I would definitely recommend one!
