Gabrielle Macdonald's Season Reflections
Season Reflections
As the year comes to a close, I have spent some time reflecting upon what has been a very successful year on the golf course and also an exciting one off it! Despite a delayed start to the season due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, I got into a real flow in the summer and wrapped up the season with two wins in a matter of weeks. These wins along with five other top ten finishes saw me finish second on the season long order of merit and secure my promotion to the main Ladies European Tour in 2022.
This hot streak of form in the summer was all a bit of a whirlwind, I played seven events in less than seven weeks, travelling between Italy, Spain and Sweden. It was a tiring trip, with hardly any days off between events but I was with two friends and playing well so it was great to keep playing. The second last event in Sweden, was where I recorded my first professional win at the Allerum Open. It was a brutal week weather wise, with strong winds and heavy rain so I think my attitude was key to playing well; staying patient and accepting that mistakes were going to happen. I won in a 5 hole play-off (after playing 54 holes) which was really satisfying to hold my nerve and perform under pressure. Celebrations were delayed until I got home after the last event in Sweden, and it was brilliant to enjoy the win with my family - as without their support these moments wouldn’t happen.
Unsurprisingly during this stretch, where I was averaging 20,000 steps a day, I picked up a few aches and pains. It was brilliant to be able to recover at Pure Spa & Beauty when I was home - the full 90-minute deep tissue massage was definitely necessary!
Throughout this busy summer of golf, I also managed to squeeze in moving houses! Luckily, I was home for the move in July, but after being away for most of the summer, there was still some unpacking to be done come September! I am now living in Longniddry, East Lothian with my boyfriend and I am loving it here… my commute to Craigielaw Golf Club is now only 5 minutes!
I finished the season with two events in Switzerland, where I won the Lavaux Ladies Open, and then a trip to Barcelona, Spain for the final event in October. I am delighted to achieve my goal of securing my card for the 2022 LET season, and I can’t wait to get started. The schedule is still to be announced but I’m looking forward to travelling further afield to countries in Africa, Asia and places I’ve never been to in Europe. Exciting times ahead, so fingers crossed there won’t be too many disruptions or travel restrictions still in place.
During my off-season, I have been enjoying my time in my new home and have gotten into outdoor swimming, as the beach is only a few minutes away. The cold water is another great way to recover, although as it’s gotten colder my dips are being replaced with trips to the sauna at the Newhaven Pure Spa! I am very lucky to have such a perfect sponsor and can’t thank everyone at Pure Spa enough for all their support. I am hoping to relax and enjoy the festive period with my family and wish everyone a happy and successful 2022!
